**** Update *****
A functioning outline for an illustration using the x-linked fruit fly eye color gene to illustration x-linked inheritance. The illustration is fully functional, but all of the visual elements are placeholders for better designs.
The XR, Xr and y labels stand for the x dominant (red) x recessive (white) and male chromosome/allele combinations. More visually engaging elements are under development. The illustration also needs more robust directions, clearer labels and some additional reporters.
But… it works. The ‘begin', ‘next', ‘back' and ‘reset' buttons are all function as planned. By clicking next generation then selecting one male and one female from the previous generation, individual crosses can be performed for as many generations as desired. Common patterns such as the disappearance of recessive traits in f1 when crossing true breeding parents can be demonstrated. You can also play around with how crossing specific pairs can rid the lineage of one or the other of the x-linked alleles.
V0.1 Status: fully functional, albeit ugly and poorly labeled.
Next steps:
- Create some custom visuals to make different alleles, genotypes and phenotypes easier to recognize
- Include summary information on the right showing as many of the previous generations as possible
- Add popup windows, labels and dialog boxes to improve usability.
